1. CJ #1: Briefly retell an ancestor story (something from your parents' or grandparents' childhood, or earlier!), then pose 5 questions about the story (even if you can't get the answers)

2. CJ #2: If you went back in time almost 200 years, to 1815, what would you find life to be like? What would be interesting or challenging for you?

What one item from today would you like to be able to take back in time with you? How might this item be helpful, and what risks would you run carrying it?

3. "Beyond the Novel" - Map and True/False worksheet on background of slavery

4. Response to "The River" - found poem or illustration

5. 4 Dialectical Journal responses to pages 33-45

6. 2 Dialectical Journal responses to pages 46-51

7. Responses to read-aloud, pages 52-58

8. For pages 58-74,

1) Write a summary of at least 100 words explaining what happened in this section (pages 58-74).

2) Write two clarification questions: what are words, sentences, or parts that you had difficulty understanding? Be specific and write two questions.

3) Look at the following list of ten words. Which of these words is most relevant to this section, pages 58-74? Choose ONE and justify your answer in a couple of sentences by explaining how it connects.
